10,000-year-old DNA, oldest ever in South Africa, shows country’s genetic consistency | Researchers from South Africa just successfully sequenced the genomes of 13 individuals that lived 1,300-10,000 years ago.
Researchers from South Africa just successfully sequenced the genomes of 13 individuals that lived 1,300-10,000 years ago.
Victoria Gibbon, a professor of biological anthropology at the University of Cape Town and co-senior author of the study, says researchers chose Oakhurst rock shelter because of its rich offering of 40 human graves and preserved artifacts, such as stone tools 12,000 years old. So the oldest genomes from Oakhurst Rock Shelter look a lot like the San and Khoekhoe groups living in the region today, the press release concludes, which isn’t the case in Europe. The latest sequencing of ancient DNA from South Africa challenges a commonly held understanding born from a limited but numerous data set.
