1935: Britain's First Milk Bar Opens


’s First Milk Bar Opens Entrepreneur Hugh Donald McIntosh struck white gold when London’s Black and White Bar opened on 1 August 1935. His name was Hugh Donald McIntosh.

Attempts to resurrect his fortune included an angora rabbit farm and a cake shop. On 1 August 1935 he opened the first British milk bar on London’s Fleet Street. The latter had dramatic names like Bandit’s Prize and Blackstocking that belied their benignity – even if you dared to add a dash of nutmeg.
