'Absolutely outraged': Former cyber official targeted by Trump speaks out after cuts to U.S. digital defense

Former cybersecurity official Chris Krebs led the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency during Trump’s first term.

In a statement to NBC News, a DHS spokesperson said that "over the years, CISA strayed from its core mission of defending against cybersecurity threats and protecting critical infrastructure." Also Monday, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital rights organization, published an open letter defending Krebs, though it initially had only a few dozen signers and none representing major cybersecurity companies. One of the signers, Katie Moussouris, the CEO of a smaller cybersecurity company, Luta Security, has told NBC News that the industry generally supports Krebs but has been wary of angering the Trump administration.
