“It’s as if I had never left China”: Vietnam’s tech worker Chinatown
As Chinese manufacturers open shop in Vietnam, Bac Ninh has become a cultural hub with Chinese restaurants, bubble tea shops, and language centers.
For a decade, Liu Nanjie ran a factory in China’s southern manufacturing hub of Guangdong, using the highly precise computerized numerical control (CNC) machines to make steel and aluminum materials for electronic devices. “There will be demand [for the metal materials] for sure,” Liu, who now rents an apartment in the Bac Ninh province and plans to split his time between Vietnam and China, told Rest of World. A grilled-sausage food stand, popular among young people after school, advertises in both Mandarin and Vietnamese.The trend is likely to only grow, particularly after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Hanoi visit last month, as it signals the government’s interest in enhanced cooperation and bilateral trade, Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, told Rest of World.
