‘Suicide pod’ activist dies after arrest over woman’s assisted death

Florian Willet was described as a ‘broken’ man when Swiss prosecutors investigated claims of incitement to suicide

He was a “broken” man after spending 70 days in custody in connection with the death of an American woman in a specially-designed capsule in a Swiss forest, according to The Last Resort, the right-to-die association he jointly chaired. Philip Nitschke, the Australian activist and founder of Exit International — who invented the pod — said in a statement on The Last Resort’s website: “When Florian was released suddenly and unexpectedly from pre-trial detention in early December 2024, he was a changed man. The statement said that Willet, who was German but lived in Switzerland, had been suffering from “acute polymorphic psychotic disorder” and had undergone three months of rehabilitation treatment after he “fell” from the third floor of his block of flats in Zurich.
