'Towards an electric future': IEA confirms global electricity demand rising at fastest rate in almost two decades

Global demand for electricity is forecast to rise significantly this year due to strong economic activity, intensifying heat waves, and expansion of clean technologies

"At the same time, it's crucial to expand and reinforce grids to provide citizens with secure and reliable electricity supply - and to implement higher energy efficiency standards to reduce the impacts of increased cooling demand on power systems." As a result, global CO2 emissions from the power sector look to be "plateauing", rather than peaking, according to the report, although it cautioned many uncertainties remained, particularly around Chinese hydropower generation which could have a major bearing on the level of coal use in the country. Elsewhere, the IEA's report warns a close eye needs to be kept on the roll out of artificial intelligence (AI) due to the technology's huge requirements for energy-intensive data centres.
