‘We Were Wrong’: An Oral History of WIRED’s Original Website


With HotWired, we introduced the world to the internet. Hyperlinks! Verticals! Banner ads! Cookies! Thirty years later, the hangover is real.

A clique of self-styled clairvoyants holed up in a post-punk loft in San Francisco, awash in Ethernet cable, psychedelics, and a near-erotic mania for this thing called cyberspace … Its subtitle was earnest and endearing: “Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier.” The idea behind it was pure nerd joy: The internet is just warm, slightly odd people looking for friends. But most of us are still raving around the internet, hanging with pals, cruising for jobs and mates, catching up on gossip and news, buying and selling stuff, and finding fellow travelers who share our woes and our passions.
