A deepfake caller pretending to be a Ukrainian official almost tricked a US senator

Security officials warned future attempts are imminent.

The head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee took a Zoom call with someone using deepfake technology to pose as a top Ukrainian official, the New York Times reports. The fake Kuleba demanded that Cardin give his opinion on foreign policy questions, including whether he supported firing long-range missiles into Russian territory. “While we have seen an increase of social engineering threats in the last several months and years, this attempt stands out due to its technical sophistication and believability,” the Senate security office email obtained by the Times read.
