A new way to prevent HIV delivers dramatic results in trial


The testing of lenacapavir was halted because results were so impressive — 100% effectiveness. The decision was made to give all participants the injection rather than the alternative daily pill.

toggle caption Barbara Debout/AFP via Getty Images For over a decade, taking a pill like Truvada every day has been the standard of care for HIV prevention efforts. “It’s fantastic,” says Dr. Jason Zucker, an assistant professor of medicine and infectious disease expert at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. When NPR asked Dr. Jared Baeten, Gilead’s vice president of HIV Clinical Development, about timeframes, he said that estimates will depend on "another trial, a regulatory review and approval."
