Adding cooking oil to asphalt to create self-healing roads
Adding cooking oil to asphalt would prevent tiny cracks from growing larger, potentially saving huge amounts of money
The research, which included input from Google and King’s College London, involved creating a sophisticated computer model of how this process unfolds at a molecular level. Armed with new insights from the digital model, the researchers came up with the idea of adding a new ingredient to the asphalt used to surface roads: tiny particles of a porous material made from plant waste. Producing infrastructure materials from local resources like waste reduces the dependence on petroleum availability, which helps those areas of the world that have limited access to petroleum-based asphalt.”
