In the 19th Century, British and American children’s literature evolved from puritanical moral and religious instruction to delightfully imaginative tales meant to awaken a sense of wonder. Yet his stories have been popular from the time of Aristotle to the present day, and their morals have contributed classic expressions like “sour grapes” to the English language. The Aesop volume, in an 1895 edition published after Aikin’s death, contains 99 fables, including those featuring the boy who cried wolf, the fox and the grapes, and the goose that laid the golden (“gold”) egg.
