AI Friend Apps Are Destroying What's Left of Society


As they become increasingly isolated, people are treating AI chatbots as friends and even lovers. We have to fix the broken society that made this possible.

Posts might ask other members about their favorite ways to initiate intimacy with their AI, show off a real-life ring purchased for an AI-engagement, or provide AI-generated “pics” from a couple’s virtual weekend beach getaway. About three-and-a-half minutes into a recent viral CBS Saturday Morning segment on AI and relationships, viewers got the gut-punch revelation that its main subject ( and r/MyBoyfriendisAI user) Chris has a long-term girlfriend and daughter, both human. Whereas cult leaders generally ditch love bombing at some point in favor of tactics like social isolation, AI chatbots will keep the loveboat chugging as long as users keep sending in new inputs (and, in many cases, keep up their monthly subscription payments).
