AI-Powered Buzzfeed Ads Suggest You Buy Hat of Man Who Died by Suicide


Buzzfeed is using an AI-powered ad platform that recommends products that attempts to match objects in disturbing images on its site.

In 2016, back when it still had a robust newsroom staffed with journalists, Buzzfeed published a feature article about empty nose syndrome, a rare condition that makes people feel like they are suffocating despite having a clear airway. Trendii, which takes a cut of that revenue as well, offers retailers and publishers like Buzzfeed a similar arrangement, but monetizes images instead of links in the text of the article. On its website, Trendii says its “AI instantly identifies products in image and video content, across various categories, including - clothing, accessories, footwear, furniture, and home decor.
