Alberta breaks summer electricity use record amid heat wave


Extremely hot temperatures pushed summer electricity use in Alberta to a new high Wednesday, according to AESO.

Extremely hot temperatures throughout Western Canada prompted the use of more air conditioners and fans Tuesday, pushing summer electricity use in Alberta to a new high. The Alberta Electric Systems Operator (AESO) said in a post to social media Wednesday, the previous summer record was 11,721 megawatts, set on June 29, 2021. Electricity and water use aren’t expected to decline Wednesday, as it it forecast to be the hottest day of the week with temperatures in the mid-to-high-30s.
