American citizen detained under ICE hold in Florida

A US-born man is in custody on a 48-hour U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold at the Leon County Jail in Tallahassee, Florida, after he was charged as an “unauthorized alien” who entered Florida without being inspected by immigration officers, according to Leon County court records.

Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, 20, was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol Wednesday when the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to his attorney Mutaqee Akbar. According to court records, Riggans found no probable cause for the charge of crossing into Florida illegally, but said she didn’t have jurisdiction to release Lopez-Gomez because of the ICE hold. Thomas Kennedy, a spokesperson for the Florida Immigrant Coalition, who was at the Leon County courthouse to assist Lopez-Gomez’s family, said the law the Georgia man was arrested under was temporarily blocked by a judge.
