An Unfortunate News From Tech World Making Me Think "Is GRINDING in Job More Important Than Your Life?"
##### An Unfortunate News From Tech World Making Me Think "Is GRINDING in Job More Important Than Your Life?" I'm heartbroken to share some very sad news about a young man, Saurabh Kumar Ladhha. At just 25 years old, working for McKinsey in Mumbai, he seemed to have the world at his feet. An IIT Madras and IIM Calcutta grad, his life was full of promise. But, devastatingly, he passed away because of overwhelming work pressure. This tragedy has deeply affected me and serves as a stark reminder of the pressures many face silently. I am very vocal about the toxic culture of corporates in my posts both here and on LinkedIn. Just a few days back I [wrote a post in which I showed how the work culture has deteriorated since 2012](https://enginebogie.com/public/charchaa/post/the-decline-of-work-life-balance-a-12-year-tech-industry-perspective/144) and today I saw this news. Saurabh was exceptionally talented, holding impressive qualifications and having interned at reputable firms before joining McKinsey. Despite his achievements, he faced immense stress from his job, a burden so heavy that it led him to believe there was no other way out. On February 23, 2024, we lost Saurabh to this silent battle. This moment calls for a serious reflection on how we perceive success and the importance of mental health. It's crucial to remember that it's okay to not have everything figured out and it's okay to feel overwhelmed. Your job should not define your entire existence. What truly matters is your well-being, your happiness, and the time you spend with loved ones. Let's honor Saurabh's memory by changing our approach to work and life. We need to create environments, both at work and home, where it's safe to express when we're not okay and to ask for help. Employers, especially, must ensure they offer support and understanding to those struggling. If you're feeling the pressure, please remember, that your health and your loved ones are infinitely more valuable than any job. It's absolutely okay to step back and take a breather. Reach out, talk to someone, and let's look after each other with more kindness and empathy. As Rancho said in the Bollywood Movie '3 Idiots', "**Ye engineers bade chalak hote hai sir, aisi koi machine hi nahi banayi jo dimag ka pressure naap sake. (In English: These engineers are very clever sir, they have not made any such machine which can measure the pressure of the brain.)**", we need to remind ourselves of the things that really matter in life rather than simply living up to societal expectations and achieving workplace targets. Saurabh's story is a painful reminder to cherish and prioritize what truly matters. Let's not wait for another wake-up call to start taking better care of ourselves and each other. Together, let's strive for a kinder world where well-being comes first.
