Anthropic finds alarming 'emerging trends' in Claude misuse report | Claude was used to create advanced malware and push paid political agendas on social media.

Claude was used to create advanced malware and push paid political agendas on social media.

The accounts spanned several countries and languages -- specifically, they "supported or undermined European, Iranian, UAE, and Kenyan interests," Anthropic noted, and appeared to "prioritize persistence and longevity over virality" -- a strategy that uses connection and the veneer of authenticity to create longer-term influence as opposed to just flooding a platform with content. This builds on earlier types of targeted social media propaganda campaigns like Cambridge Analytica, for example, by using what Anthropic calls "seemingly organic interactions" to pull people into echo chambers. "Our intelligence program is meant to be a safety net by both finding harms not caught by our standard scaled detection and to add context in how bad actors are using our models maliciously," Anthropic said about its process.
