Aqueous-based recycling of perovskite photovoltaics

A recycling strategy based predominantly on the use of water to restore and reuse valuable components from perovskite photovoltaic waste is described, with recycled devices showing similar efficiency and stability compared with fresh devices.

We demonstrate that our recycling strategy can greatly alleviate the environmental burden of waste perovskite modules, especially for the human toxicity and resource depletion impacts, and also reduce the levelized cost of electricity. We assess midpoint impact categories following the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology, as outlined in the International Energy Agency Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme Task 12 report, to reveal the full-spectrum consequences associated with climate change, human health, resource depletion and so on 32. The control perovskite FA 0.97 Cs 0.03 PbI 3 active layer precursor was prepared by dissolving 1.85 M lead iodide, 1.65 M FAI, 0.58 M MACl and 0.05 M CsI in 1 ml DMF and DMSO mixed solution at a volume ratio of 8:1.
