Astronomers Have Found 6,000 Planets Outside the Solar System

From lava worlds to gas giants, NASA says the variety of these worlds is staggering—and that signs of a further 8,000 distant planets are awaiting confirmation.

As a result of continued monitoring by NASA’s Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI), there are more than 8,000 potential planets that have been identified and are awaiting confirmation. Future research at NASA will focus on Earth-like rocky planets, and in particular on studying their atmospheres to look for biological signatures: any features, elements, molecules, or substances that could be evidence of life being there, past or present. Both of its forthcoming missions—the Roman Space Telescope and the Habitable Worlds Observatory—will be equipped with tools to block out starlight, with the aim of making even the faintest Earth-like planets like Earth visible.
