ATProto Isn't What You Think


This post takes a look at ATProto from a different angle, and explores the value of some possibly less-noticed pieces of it.

I've seen a lot of different kinds of apps popping up around ATProto lately and I think one thing that isn't immediately obvious is that most of them are, in a large way, just typical, centralized web applications. Us at Muni Town, as well as a couple other ATProto project developers I've talked to, are thinking about hosting PDSes so that users don't need a Bluesky account to join. We're making a toolkit for building apps that can work offline and efficiently sync their data to other peers or services, including their ATProto PDS.
