Australia to ban under-16s from social media – but can't say how TikTok


Meta says it will comply if required, but the technology is not ready to enforce proposed age limit across up to 40 apps

The prime minister confirmed the age limit at a press conference on Thursday, in the latest step of the government’s increasing scrutiny on major tech platforms, with plans to introduce legislation into parliament this month. Albanese raised concern about the effect of social media on young people, including the potential for content related to misogyny or body image, as his reasoning for the new laws. The shadow communications minister, David Coleman, said the issue was “urgent” and called for the bill to be rushed through by the end of November – even before the age assurance trial reports on what options exist to enforce that law.
