Auto takeoff system undergoes flight testing to eliminate tail strike
Embraer is set to transform takeoffs with its automated system, reducing pilot workload and virtually eliminating the risk of tail strikes.
Luís Carlos Affonso, senior vice president of engineering and technological development at Embraer, recently flew the system on a real aircraft and noted its impressive capabilities. For now, Embraer plans to introduce the system at three airports: London City in England, Florence in Italy, and Santos Dumont in Brazil, while noting interest from additional locations. The system simply adds automation to the takeoff phase, allowing the autopilot to be engaged, but the pilot remains essential and will take control in the event of a failure, Affonso concluded.
