Avoiding a Geopolitical open-source Apocalypse
The rise of China’s open source development is leading to concerns about a potential split between Eastern and Western open source ecosystems.
While at the CNCF event mentioned above, one of my co-workers suggested partnering with an open source Database as a Service (DBaaS) project primarily developed in China. Open source software mainly made in the West has well-documented security issues of its own, due in part to its heavy reliance on overworked and volunteer maintainers. Creating shared interests and groups around securing software supply chains for all involved is critical, but it won’t be enough to rely on independent open source foundations alone.
