On the 19th of December in 1985, The New York Times Magazine ran an article titled Playing with Apocalypse by David Aaron, Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs during the Carter administration. I assured him that dropping deaths did not hurt the game's realism; never, in all my years on the National Security Council, had I heard the total number of fatalities discussed as a policy consideration. Balance of Power has become a time capsule that preserves the mindset of an era of global tension, and the worst and deepest fears of multiple generations of human beings.
