Biden’s top tech adviser says AI is a ‘today problem’

OSTP Director Arati Prabhakar says the time to regulate AI is now.

Arati has a long history of working in government: she was the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and she headed up the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for five years during the Obama administration. The reason I was so excited when the president asked if I would do this job a couple of years ago is because my personal experience has been working in R&D and in technology and innovation from lots of different vantage points. If you combine the classic insights of social science research with data and AI, I think it’s starting to be very, very powerful, which, as you know from everything I’ve told you, means it’s going to come with bright and dark sides.
