In the back of my mind was the often fabled "Mega games" by Imagine Software which were planned to use extra hardware on the Spectrum and Commodore 64 to augment the machine's capabilities. While it is certainly possible to code an application entirely with only high level language knowledge, it is an advantage to know low-level architecture to help debug hopefully rare performance or error situations.
