Breakthrough air-to-water converter works even at night, generates 20L daily
Soldiers serving in remote locations and arid conditions could soon hydrate themselves using water harvested directly from the air.
The team recognized the need for hydration for soldiers operating in areas with scarce water resources and approached the University of Utah for possible solutions. “We work with a specific type of hygroscopic material called a metal organic framework (MOF),” explained Sameer Rao, assistant professor at the John and Marcia Price College of Engineering, University of Utah. In a prototype developed by the team, the compact device adsorbed 1.3 gallons of pure water (five liters) using one kilogram of hygroscopic material daily.
