Breakthrough robot nails surgery like a human doctor after watching videos | The model can quickly train robots for diverse surgeries, from basic tasks to full procedures, advancing robotic medical capabilities.

A robot trained via video observation performs surgery with skill rivaling human doctors, moving robotic surgery closer to autonomous procedures.

A robot, trained solely by observing seasoned surgeons on video, has successfully replicated complex surgical procedures, performing with a skill level comparable to experienced human doctors. We find that even with a few hundred demos, the model is able to learn the procedure and generalize new environments it hasn’t encountered,” said Ji Woong “Brian” Kim, a postdoctoral researcher at Johns Hopkins and lead author, in a statement. Previously, programming robots for even basic surgical steps required meticulously coding each action, sometimes taking years to model a single aspect like suturing for one specific surgery type.
