Britain takes stake in SpaceX rival Orbex to boost space ambitions

The U.K. government has invested £20 million in Orbex, a Scottish spaceflight startup aiming to rival Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Supporting Orbex will help "turbocharge the country's position in the space sector," said British Tech Minister Peter Kyle in a Wednesday statement. Orbex CEO Phillip Chambers said that the government's investment "demonstrates its confidence in the UK's space rocket manufacturing and launch sector." Orbex, Skyrora and RFA specialize in so-called microlauncher rockets, which are typically much smaller in size than others and are designed to carry far lighter payloads.
