Bulgaria to join euro area on 1 January 2026
The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank of the European Union countries which have adopted the euro. Our main task is to maintain price stability in the euro area and so preserve the purchasing power of the single currency.
Conversion rate of lev fixed at 1.95583 = EUR 1 Bulgaria joined the ERM II in 2020 Bulgarian banks supervised by ECB since 2020 Participation in ERM II and observance of the normal fluctuation margins for at least the last two years is one of the convergence criteria to be fulfilled ahead of euro area accession. The conversion rate of the lev is set by way of an amendment to Regulation (EC) No 2866/98, which will become effective on 1 January 2026.
