China builds Mars battery that creates power from atmosphere, thrives in icy cold | The battery can operate continuously for months — with a charge/discharge cycle life of 1,375 hours (roughly two Martian months).

This is a significant advantage as it eliminates the need to transport fuel to Mars, reducing the overall weight and complexity of the mission.

A team of scientists from the University of Science and Technology of China has presented a novel solution — a unique battery designed to harness the Martian atmosphere as its fuel during discharge. “Once depleted, the battery can be recharged using solar energy harvested from the Martian surface, enabling it to be prepared for subsequent discharges,” the press release stated. Future research will focus on developing solid-state Mars batteries that can overcome the challenges of low pressure and temperature fluctuations, paving the way for advanced space exploration systems.
