China tests world’s first megawatt-level airship to capture high winds

China’s S1500 airborne wind turbine completes maiden flight, becoming the world’s largest floating wind-power generator.

SAWES developed the airship with support from Tsinghua University and the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Researchers mastered aerostat stability, ultra-light generators, and kilometer-scale high-voltage tethers to make large airborne wind systems feasible. “The airborne platform can be launched quickly after an earthquake or flood to keep lights, radios and life-saving equipment running,” said Weng Hanke, chief technology officer of SAWES.
