Chinese ebook reader Boox ditches GPT for state-censored China LLM pushing propaganda

A recent AI model switch at Chinese e-reader company Boox has raised concerns about censorship and propaganda.

As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently warned, when companies bring in foreign language models, they're not just getting new technology - they're importing all the values and viewpoints baked into these systems. The new model blocks critical questions about China and its allies, such as Russia, Syria, and North Korea, and refuses to make statements about sensitive topics like Tiananmen Square, instead promoting state-approved narratives. This case illustrates that imported AI models not only transport technology but also carry with them the values and attitudes embedded in their training data, potentially spreading the influence of the originating country's ideology and propaganda.
