Cities must act quickly to challenge disinformation-fuelled violence

Riots and unrest in the UK after the Southport tragedy show the need for cities to act quickly against disinformation, says University of Melbourne expert

Media reports suggest these were fuelled by disinformation in the immediate aftermath of the horrific murder of three children at a Taylor Swift dance class in the British town of Southport. The Southport disinformation wrongly characterised the attacker and his motivations, which remain unclear, and led to violent anti-Islam and anti-illegal immigration protests. In Australia, disinformation spread rapidly after recent violent events including an attack at a shopping centre and on an Orthodox priest.
