The bases include some special things like partially transparent windows that allow the background to show through and energy doors that can be shot to break them open. For projects of this size I don’t do a lot of hand minification but instead rely on tools like Google Closure so the source code can remain clean and easy to work with. That game engine is now called LittleJS and there is special example project for JS13K that builds to a 7KB zip leaving tons of room to pack with your art and gameplay.
