Creating My Own Linux-Based Smart TV

2024-07-03 Carl Riis This is my absolutely awesome custom TV setup that I call “EarlGreyTV”. It’s the product of an experiment of mine: can I create my own functional Smart TV? The answer is yes — at least one that works for my needs.

A couple of years ago, I accidentally spilled a cup of earl grey tea into its keyboard (hence the name EarlGreyTV). These are done using a userChrome.css file, and include never showing the address bar in full-screen, and hiding other small Firefox UI features. I can add shortcuts to specific parts of sites I visit frequently, like the latest news in my Danish public broadcast app (DR TV).
