Cursed Excel: "1/2"+1=45660
Explore Excel's bizarre date/time quirks—like “1/2”+1=45660—and how Quadratic fixes legacy issues with a modern approach to datetimes and spreadsheet logic.
In October 1582, Pope Gregory XIII officially decreed that the Catholic Church would use the new calendar system developed by Aloysius Lilius(then deceased) and Christopher Clavius. This is a pretty clever solution, although it’s a bit awkward to start at 2 and it causes dates before March 1, 1900 to be off-by-one when importing from Excel. We’re building Quadratic from the ground up to work well with Python, SQL, JavaScript, and other modern programming and database tooling, so incorrect calendar systems are not an option.
