Debugging Tech Journalism

A huge proportion of tech journalism is characterized by scandals, sensationalism, and shoddy research. Can we fix it?

In a December article, I dug into this and other recent research to help to illuminate what OpenAI is likely working on: a framework that would enable AI systems to search through a large space of possible solutions to a problem. I think it might be helpful for the reporters doing this kind of work to write for two sets of readers, with a specialist newsletter that covers day-to-day developments on their beats as well as occasional pieces that get syndicated to a mainstream audience. So I’d love to have a program that paid competitive salaries for articulate technical experts to spend a year or two at a university or think tank serving as a source for reporters working on technology stories.
