Expect more fires like the fast-moving one in Malibu, scientists say.
And this year, extremely dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds created the perfect recipe for dangerous late-year fires. It’s true that Santa Ana winds—dry winds that blow from the high desert out to the coast and bring low humidity, at times under 10 percent—routinely pick up in the fall and winter. A downtown Los Angeles weather station has recorded only 5.7 inches of rain this year, and not even a quarter-inch has fallen in December, which is usually the middle of the region’s wet season.
