Delta agrees to pay $79 million after a plane dumped thousands of gallons of fuel over homes and schools in California during an emergency

Delta Air Lines agreed to settle a 2020 case where fuel was dumped over Los Angeles, leaving elementary school children with skin and eye irritation.

Earlier that month, Delta Flight 89 suffered engine problems shortly after taking off from Los Angeles International Airport. "Delta is confident it would prove at trial there was no property damage, diminution in value, or lasting harm to residents from the actions taken by the crew," the filing says. It added that the airline agreed to the settlement to avoid uncertainty and the expenses of a trial and "to eliminate the distraction and other burdens this litigation has caused to Delta's business."
