Direct fabrication of lasers on silicon suggests solution to chip-production problem

On-chip laser diodes installed with industry-compatible method.

The lack of methods for preparing miniature lasers directly on silicon wafers is holding back photonic technology in a range of applications, including machine learning. The Internet is underpinned by light-wave communications, in which information is transmitted by pulses of light routed from a growing number of data centres. Writing in Nature, De Koninck et al. 5 solve this problem by reporting a method for fabricating lasers on standard silicon wafers that is compatible with existing processes and systems used to manufacture chips.
