I’m going to tell you about how I took a job building software to kill people. But don’t get distracted by that; I didn’t know at the time.

In practice, as The New York Times reports, it was used in Portland to avoid code enforcement officers working to build a case against Uber for operating without a license. When triggered by Uber’s logic, it populates the app with cars that don’t exist, with fake drivers who quickly cancel after accepting a ride. I’ve driven the two hour commute to Sterling, Virginia, home of 395 defense contractors awarded 16.8 trillion dollars in contracts over the past 16 years.
