Dune come true: Sci-fi-like spacesuit turns urine into drinking water


In Dune's fictitious universe, the Fremen, the inhabitants of the desert planet Arrakis, wear the full-body stillsuit.

The researchers explored various purification methods for the urine, including using reverse osmosis alone, filtering with bacteria, using electricity (electrolysis), and even harnessing the power of space radiation. “After much thought and debate, we eventually landed on a combination of forward and reverse osmosis, which we believed would give us the highest purity with the least energy use and risk,” Etlin said.
