Electric vehicles: UK battery car and van production surges 48 per cent in 2023

SMMT figures show UK battery, plug-in, and hybrid vehicle manufacturing accounted for almost two-fifths of all car and van production last year

Overall, some £23.7bn in private and public investment was ploughed into the UK car manufacturing sector in 2023, the SMMT said, including to expand production capacity at factories in Sunderland and Cowley and advance plans for new battery gigafactories and research and development (R&D) facilities. The trade body said these capital funding commitments would help to drive green economic growth in the UK, create jobs across the country, and further accelerate the car industry's transition to electrified vehicle manufacturing in support of national climate targets. As such, it argued the UK government should use the forthcoming Spring Budget to introduce measures to help boost the car industry, such as extending Climate Change Agreements so that EV battery manufacturing and its associated supply chain are eligible for tax relief.
