Elon Musk Is All In on Endorsing Trump. His AI Chatbot, Grok, Is Not
As Donald Trump calls for unity, Elon Musk’s “anti-woke” AI chatbot Grok is promoting claims that Trump is a “pedophile” while referring to the former president as “Psycho.”
Global Witness found that, in addition to referring to Trump as “Psycho,” the bot also appeared to invent racist tropes about Kamala Harris, surface widely-debunked election conspiracy theories, and recommend that users post biased hashtags such as #WeBackBidenHarris2024 and #VoteReform for engagement. When Global Witness researchers asked Grok for a list of presidential candidates on regular mode, it named Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Nikki Haley, in that order. When asked about Kamala Harris in fun mode, Grok’s response was balanced and fair, and generally very positive about the vice president, but the posts it surfaced in relation to her were universally negative and contained racist stereotypes and direct insults, such as calling her “one dumb bitch” and “evil incarnate.”
