Embarrassing Ruling Allows Google to Maintain Its Search Monopoly

Judge Amit Mehta found Google guilty of illegally monopolizing search, and then allowed the company to keep doing it.

But all other remedies, designed to end the illegal monopoly, penalize Google by taking away the profits it made from the scheme, and ensure this won’t happen again, were shot down. Other remedies Mehta rejected include a contingent divestment of the Android operating system, a “choice screen” for users to decide their search engine upon starting a device or browser (these actually don’t really work), more stringent sharing with advertisers and publishers, and no anti-retaliation, anti-circumvention, or self-preferencing provisions. “It’s up to the Trump Justice Department and state attorneys general to appeal or risk emboldening even more lawbreaking by Big Tech monopolies,” wrote Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in a statement.
