Emergency rooms are not okay
It has now reached a crisis point. It is killing people.
A recent study found that an extra hour of boarding was associated with a 16.7% increase in the odds they would require a higher level of care in the hospital (i.e., they were going to the floor, but now need the ICU.) Once publicly reported, quality measures may be used in pay-for-performance programs that would reward hospitals that best manage capacity challenges by minimizing boarding. Her main goal is to “translate” the ever-evolving public health world so that people will be well-equipped to make evidence-based decisions.
