Engineers develop ‘wraparound’ device for spinal cord treatment | This approach inspired by microelectronics involves wrapping very thin, high-resolution implants around the whole spinal cord.

This approach inspired by microelectronics involves wrapping very thin, high-resolution implants around the whole spinal cord.

Spinal cord injuries are notoriously difficult to treat because of the complexity of the spine and the vital role it plays in the body. Advances recently made in engineering and neurosurgery enabled this team across related disciplines to take a big step forward in the pursuit of safer treatments for spinal cord injuries. “It was a difficult process,” George Malliaras, co-leader of the study, says, “because we haven’t made spinal implants in this way before, and it wasn’t clear that we could safely and successfully place them around the spine.”
