Environmental journalism is under attack
Attacks on environmental journalists are on the rise.
Between 2009 and last year, more than 70 percent of reporters experienced attacks while working on environmental stories ranging from mining and deforestation to protests and land grabs. “This year is notable for a clear lack of political will on the part of the international community to enforce the principles of protection of journalists,” the organization says. Along with its report, UNESCO also highlighted work from several environmental photojournalists, including a photo by Manuel Seoane of a lone person standing on a small boat stranded on a dry, cracked lake bed.
