EU rules for durable, energy-efficient and repairable smartphones and tablets
Designed to boost the product lifespan, energy efficiency, and ease of repair, the measures will also help consumers make more informed and sustainable purchasing choices.
TeresaRibera, Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition said: “By empowering consumers with reliable information and ensuring devices are designed to last longer and be part of a circular economy, we are making sustainability the new standard, not just for our environment, but for Europe’s digital future” As part of this, the Circular Electronics Initiative introduces regulatory measures under the Ecodesign Directive for devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, ensuring they are designed for energy efficiency, durability, repairability, upgradability, maintenance, reuse and recycling. The Commission adopted the new Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Regulations for smartphones and tablets in July 2023, after extensive consultation with industry, consumer groups, and environmental stakeholders.
